Pair of 18th Century French Carved Walnut, Leather and Needlepoint Armchairs

About the Item

These antique fruitwood armchairs were crafted in France, circa 1760, and would make an elegant addition to a living room, study or library. The chairs stands on cabriole legs ending with paw feet over a scalloped apron decorated with floral and leaf motifs; each fauteuil is upholstered with its original handwoven needlepoint tapestry embellished with a lovely floral motifs. The seat flanked with carved armrests has been re-upholstered with a durable, light brown leather and dressed with decorative brass nail heads. Both armchairs are in excellent condition commensurate with age and use and adorn a rich walnut patina. Measures: 27" W x 22" D x 43" H.

Crafted in Provence, France circa 1880, each comfortable fauteuil sits on cabriole legs decorated with acanthus leaves at the shoulder, and ending with escargot feet over an X-form stretcher. Both armchairs have a tall and arched back, a wide and deep seat flanked with open curved armrests decorated with acanthus leaf motifs, over a scalloped apron decorated with hand carved shell and foliate motif on all four sides.
