About the Item

Many associate the design duo, Robert Guillerme and Jacques Chambron, with some of the most recognisable and enduring French furniture of the second half of the 20th century. Working for their workshop Votre Maison, founded in the early 1950s, the pair developed a distinctive design language that merged modernist ideals with rustic warmth and a deep respect for traditional craftsmanship. Known for their expressive use of solid oak and thoughtful detailing, their works continue to stay relevant today. This pair of oak armchairs perfectly embodies the duo’s dedication to form, comfort, and material integrity. At the core of these chairs is the use of oak, a material cherished by the designers for its strength and warm, natural character. The slightly curved backrests feature three carved, tapered vertical slats, providing both a sculptural rhythm and comfortable support. The rich grain of the oak is showcased beautifully throughout the frames, highlighting the designers' commitment to material honesty and a tactile aesthetic. The open armrests are gracefully angled, offering both visual lightness and practical comfort, allowing the sitter to relax fully. Upholstered in a warm, textured fabric, the seat cushions add softness and perfectly complement the wooden structures. These cushions fit carefully within the frames, emphasizing the duo's meticulous attention to detail and proportion. From the subtle inclination of the back legs to the gentle curve of the arm supports, every element is thoughtfully balanced to create a harmonious model. These armchairs represent a stunning synthesis of sculptural elegance and everyday functionality, making them an ideal addition to contemporary and classic interiors alike. As with much of Guillerme et Chambron's work, this pair stands as a testament to mid-century French design at its finest: charming, inviting, and crafted to endure. Pair of "Edouard" Armchairs by Guillerme et Chambron, France 1960s
By Votre Maison, Guillerme et Chambron
Located in Utrecht, NL
The “Edouard” lounge chair is often described as a “caquetoire”, or a conversation chair. This type of seating was an armchair style which emerged during the European Renaissance in France. As the name suggests, this type of chair was meant for sitting for elongated periods to chat. Generally, these chairs were also highly regarded for their aesthetic value as well, which can also be said about these exceptional chair models. The “Edouard” is a sculptural model with a blonde oak frame that is characteristic of the French designer duo. The design showcases the wide variety of shapes and forms of the solid oak frames, from the curving lines to the straighter spindles comprising the backrests. Naturally, a conversation chair needs to be first and foremost functional and comfortable, therefore the backs are slightly tilted, and the seat raised, aided by the generous seat and back cushions. The French caquetoire chairs...
