About the Item
Pair of Reupholstered Bauhaus Thonet Cantilever Armchairs in Tubular Steel, 1935
A rare and elegant pair of Bauhaus cantilever armchairs designed by Thonet, produced circa 1935. These early 20th-century chairs are an enduring symbol of Bauhaus innovation—where radical simplicity met modern materials and engineering.
Featuring seamless tubular steel frames in a cantilevered form, these chairs exemplify the Bauhaus commitment to both function and form. The fluid structure provides gentle flexibility, a revolutionary comfort innovation of the era, while visually embodying lightness and modernity.
Each chair has been newly reupholstered in a refined grey textile, carefully selected to honor the original modernist aesthetic. The curved solid wood armrests have been gently refinished, restoring their warm tactile presence without losing character. The chrome-plated steel shows minor patina consistent with age, adding authenticity and charm without detracting from their pristine presentation.
These pieces reflect the work of Bauhaus pioneers such as Mart Stam and Marcel Breuer, and were likely produced under the direction of Thonet, the legendary manufacturer behind some of the most iconic modernist furniture of the 20th century.
Whether styled in a contemporary, minimalist, or eclectic interior, these chairs bring museum-quality design into the living space. Rare, architectural, and exceptionally comfortable, they are ideal for discerning collectors or serious design enthusiasts.
