About the Item

The Toro armchair by Jacques Jarrige is a bold sculptural work that fuses unexpected materials with refined craftsmanship. Each chair is meticulously shaped by layering and gluing sheets of cardboard into volume before being carved by hand—an unconventional process that aligns more closely with sculpture than traditional furniture-making. The form is then reinforced with aluminum, coated in a lustrous high-gloss lacquer finish, and brought to life as a striking, functional artwork. The chair’s silhouette is at once robust and fluid, defined by sweeping curves, sculpted planes, and playful asymmetry. The open armrests, each pierced with negative space, are signature elements in Jarrige’s work—gestures that reveal his fascination with the interplay between mass and void. These openings offer both visual lightness and physical comfort, accentuating the rhythm of the form while allowing light and shadow to pass through. Though the Toro armchair has a strong, almost architectural presence, it retains a sense of movement and sensuality. The swelling contours and tightly resolved edges give the chair a feeling of vitality—as though it were frozen mid-gesture. This combination of softness and strength is characteristic of Jarrige’s furniture, where every angle and curve feels considered, yet spontaneous. The surface, finished in a rich, reflective black lacquer, elevates the sculptural qualities of the form. It smooths and unifies the handmade texture of the underlying materials, allowing the lines and volumes to take center stage. The chair is also available in a crisp white lacquer, which offers a very different but equally compelling presence. This Toro armchair is more than a seat—it is a living sculpture. Ideal in pairs or as a singular statement piece, it brings both function and expressive form to contemporary interiors. Two pairs are currently available in black; custom finishes or quantities may be commissioned upon request.
