About the Item

19th c., China,. A beautifully constructed pair of carved wood benches. The rectangular top is over inset legs topped with carved cloud spandrels and joined by stretchers. The relatively simple and calm form of these benches echoes the gracious and thoughtful Ming-era approach to furniture making. These benches have been refinished with laquer possibly removed. The resultant effect is to highlight the wood grain. The quiet simplicity of the form of these benches suggests use in a wide variety of design schemes. Dimensions: Approx. 20"h x 61"l x 14"w Condition: Good, refinished with smooth surface, old darkened scratches visible under finish. The underside shows original wood finish. Show well. Ready to place. Provenance: A Private Collection: 1165 Park Avenue, NYC.
