About the Item

"Torquemada" is a chair, designed by Philippe Starck and manufactured by Driade, with a structure in matt lacquered textured beech available, as Philippe Starck himself revealed in a funny way, in white, gray, yellow, lavender gray or carnation colors. Backrest element support in polished or mirror finished cast aluminum. Indoor use only. DIMENSIONS: D. 18.8", W. 16.1", H. 30.5", Seat H. 18.3" Although these pieces of design seem apparently imperfect and unique, the collection is composed of a table and a set of seats: a chair, an armchair and a stool. The latter feature two handcuffs in mirror-polished stainless steel, a detail that is as structural as well as decorative and ironically reminiscent of the imagery coming from the ancient Inquisition and its infamous and fearsome prosecutor. A link that regards the concept as well as the project and explains where the name of this collection comes from. Philippe Starck said about "Torquemada" collection: "One day, the Flintstone family invited Little Red Riding Hood to dinner. While they were dining, the seven dwarfs painted the chairs in bright colors. How disgraceful! As time went by, they learnt to love them.” PHILIPPE STARCK is an internationally acclaimed French creator, designer and architect. His profound comprehension of contemporary mutations, his determination to change the world, his anticipatory concern for environmental implications, his love of ideas, his desire to defend the intelligence of usefulness and the usefulness of intelligence have accompanied one iconic creation after the other. From everyday products such as furniture and lemon squeezers to revolutionary mega-yachts, individual windmills, electric bikes or hotels and restaurants that aspire to be wondrous, stimulating and intensely vibrant places. This untiring and rebellious citizen of the world, who considers sharing his ethical and subversive vision of a fairer planet as a duty, creates unconventional places and objects whose purpose is to be “good” before being beautiful. Philippe Starck and his wife, Jasmine, mostly live on an airplane or in “middles of nowhere”.

By employing his prolific work across all domains, from everyday products (furniture, a citrus-squeezer, electric bikes, an individual wind turbine), to architecture (hotels, restaurants that aspire to be stimulating places) and naval and spatial engineering (mega yachts, space habitation module), he continually pushes the boundaries and requirements of design, becoming one of the most visionary and renowned creators of the international contemporary scene.
