About the Item

The iconic Spanish chair is Børge Mogensen’s masterful contribution to modern design, designed for Fredericia in 1958. Solid oak or walnut combined with the highest caliber saddle leather creates a strong presence in a chair that will only become more beautiful with age. Lounge chair of solid wood and saddle leather. Interchangeable seat and back made in vegetable tanned saddle leather with metal buckles. Leather seat has canvas backing. Saddle straps can be tightened as the leather expands through use. This Spanish chair combines soaped oak and natural leather, celebrating the essence of natural materials. Soap treated wood is a lot like untreated wood, characterized by the beautiful patina, which is created over time. The soaped oak showcases the organic beauty of untreated wood, developing a unique patina that deepens over time, adding character to each piece. The natural leather, equally rich, ages gracefully, forming a distinct patina that becomes more pronounced with use. Together, these materials ensure that the chair not only stands out in any space but also evolves beautifully, embodying a timeless elegance that grows richer with every year. Borge Mogensen Spanish Chair in Natural Leather and Oak
By Fredericia
Located in Sag Harbor, NY
In 1958, Børge Mogensen and his family travelled to Spain. In Andalucia he fell in love with an old chair with a wide seat and broad armrests. Once back in Denmark, he created The Spanish Chair. The chair he fell in love with is a traditional type of chair and is very common in areas influenced by ancient Islamic culture – from Spain to northern India. Børge Mogensen modernised the design by removing the elaborate carvings, and thus he created his own version with his customary geometrical precision. Yet he retained the most important feature: the broad armrests that give the chair its distinctive character. The broad armrests also serve as a practical place to place a cup or a glass. By designing The Spanish Chair Mogensen...
