About the Item

Rare and stunning Scandinavian Modern sofa settee attributed to Philip Arctander and made in the 1940s by a Swedish Cabinetmaker. It is made from solid Scandinavian pinewood with a beautiful grain and has been reupholstered in white Vägen textile from Svensk Tenn. Fitted with leather buttons from Niger goat hide. Who made it? This sofa has previously been ascribed to Danish architect Phillip Arctander, but recent research has shown that this is not the case. It is more accurate to ascribe this style to Danish designers Arnold Madsen & Henry Schubell, who were responsible for the design of the famous Clam chair that shares some similarities to this sofa. But it was manufactured in Sweden and the materials is typical for the Sportstuga style that was a dominant style in Sweden in the early 20th century as known from Axel Einar Hjort, Göran Malmvall and other notable Swedish designers. The story of this beautiful and rare piece is definitely enigmatic and has yet to be completed. About the vagen textile: Swedish designer Margit Thorén created the Vägen furniture fabric with Estrid Ericson in 1949. Three linen threads in different shades give it a beautiful lustre. It has a diagonal weave of twined linen in a cotton warp which makes it very sturdy and suitable as upholstery fabric.
