Mid-Century Modern Two-Seat "Coronado" Sofa by Tobia Scarpa for B&B Italia 1960s

About the Item

Mid-Century Modern Two-Seat "Coronado" Sofa by Tobia Scarpa for B&B Italia in Teddy Upholstery, Italy, 1960s An iconic design by acclaimed Italian architect and designer Tobia Scarpa, the “Coronado” sofa is a celebrated classic of mid-century Italian modernism. Designed in the 1960s for B&B Italia, this two-seat version exemplifies Scarpa’s vision of combining comfort with cutting-edge construction and timeless form. Featuring the original patented internal structure by B&B Italia—constructed from special steel and cold-formed polyurethane foam (Polysoft)—the sofa was revolutionary in its day, both technically and aesthetically. The structure is durable yet lightweight, offering unmatched comfort and resilience. This particular piece has been newly reupholstered in a quality teddy-style boucle fabric, adding warmth, texture, and a contemporary twist to the classic silhouette. The ultra-soft, inviting surface pairs beautifully with the sofa’s sculptural armrests and deep cushions, creating an exceptionally cozy and stylish seating experience. Its gently backrest and plush Dacron-filled cushions provide excellent support, while the tufted detailing on the back adds an element of understated luxury. The low, rounded proportions make it a versatile addition to modern, minimalist, or eclectic interiors. Dimensions: Width: 149 cm Depth: 90 cm Height: 74 cm Seat Height: 40 cm Condition: Excellent vintage condition. Fully reupholstered in new teddy boucle fabric. Original internal structure with B&B Italia tag intact. This two-seater Coronado sofa is not only a masterclass in comfort and innovation but also a collectible piece of Italian design heritage—ideal for those seeking both form and function in a statement seating piece. Tobia Scarpa Coronado Leather Sofa for B&B Italia, 1975
By B&B Italia, Tobia Scarpa
Located in New York, NY
'Coronado' two seat sofa in beautiful cognac leather, designed by Tobia Scarpa and manufactured by the Italian firm, B&B Italia, circa 1975. The seating are made with a then revolutionary kind of molded polyurethane foam for excellent support and comfort. The 'Coronado', was the first ever seating to be built using this new technique: the foam molds were assembled around an iron frame, resulting in a sturdy yet extremely comfortable product. The present two seater sofa offered in its original cognac leather upholstery preserved in excellent condition. Labels affixed on both pieces read 'Coronado' designed by Tobia Scarpa for B&B Italia. Afra and Tobia Scarpa designs were characterized by simplicity and elegance, accompanied with modern and refined aesthetics. During the 1960's, the couple designed the Bastiano sofa and the Vanessa bed for Gavina and the Soriana armchair and Poltroncina 925 for Cassina, now exhibited in the permanent collection of the MoMA. Among their most famous projects is the ‘Coronado’ sofa, made for B&B Italia in 1966 and recognized as one of the first polyurethane models. Other notable collaborations during this decade included designs with Maxalto, Molteni, Meritalia (the Libertà...
