About

Milo Baughman for Thayer Coggin, sofa model 825, white faux leather, USA, 1980s This semi circular sofa in white faux leather is designed by Milo Baughman for Thayer Coggin. The sofa consists of two separate parts, that can either be used to create a large half-circle or as two separate parts. The plinths bases results in a floating character of this large sofa. The sectional lay out and the clean Minimalist aesthetic result in a very versatile piece that can be used in both modern spaces but will also go very well in interiors with a Hollywood Regency feel to it. The leatherette shows signs of age and use, showing small tears in the seat. This can be restored or the sofas can be complete reupholstered. This is possible in any kind of leather or fabric of your choice. The very experienced craftsman of our in-house atelier are specialists on reupholstery of design furniture. With high attention for the original, they make sure every piece retains its value and is ready for the many years to come. Feel free to ask for more information and the many possibilities. Milo Baughman (1923-2003) is one of the American midcentury designers who is known for home design and his collaboration with Thayer Coggin Inc., of High Point, NC, which began in 1953 and lasted until his death in 2003. He was an advocate of modern American style and was a lecturer around the United States, educating about good design. Baughman's design were typically relaxed and timeless which showed in his designs.

About the Designer

Milo Baughman

Milo Baughman was one of the most agile and adept modern American furniture designers of the late 20th century. A prolific lecturer and writer on the benefits of good design — he taught for years at Brigham Young University — Baughman (whose often-scrambled surname is pronounced BAWF-man) focused almost exclusively on residential furnishings, having a particular talent for lounge chairs, perhaps the most sociable piece of furniture. Like his fellow adoptive Californians Charles and Ray Eames, Baughman’s furniture has a relaxed and breezy air. Baughman was famously opposed to ostentatious and idiosyncratic designs that were made to excite attention. While many of his chair designs are enlivened by such effects as tufted upholstery, Baughman tended to let his materials carry the aesthetic weight, most often relying on chair and table frames made of sturdy and sleek flat-bar chromed metal, and chairs, tables and cabinets finished with highly-figured wood veneers. Like his colleagues Karl Springer and the multifarious Pierre Cardin, Baughman’s designs are emblematic of the 1970s: sleek, sure and scintillating. As you will see from the furniture presented on these pages, Milo Baughman’s designs are ably employed as either the heart of a décor or its focal point.
