About the Item

This very rare cabinet was designed by Axel Einar Hjorth and produced by Nordiska Kompaniet in Sweden. It is part of the iconic Lovö series, designed by Hjorth in the early 1930s. The design is executed in solid pine wood, featuring black iron rivets, door hinges, and an escutcheon. The interior includes two drawers and three shelves. The key is included. The cabinet is in good condition and has been gently restored, preserving the original patina that gives the pine wood its depth and warmth. The lock is functioning, the key is of a later date. About Axel Einar Hjorth Between 1926 and 1938, Axel Einar Hjorth was the lead designer for Sweden’s Nordiska Kompaniet department store, during which time he produced the Sportstugemöbler series. Sportstugemöbler, meaning “sports cabin furnishings,” was a collection of wooden furniture designed for country homes. In the 1930s, a Swedish public education campaign promoted healthy, active lifestyles and encouraged vacation time, which eventually led to more Swedes acquiring vacation homes. The various models in the Sportstugemöbler series were named after locations in the Stockholm archipelago—Blidö, Lovö, Utö, Sandhamn, Torö, and others. The furniture was simple and constructed from strong, natural materials. In this collection, Hjorth blended the ideals of the modernist movement with provincial Swedish traditions, resulting in a unique form of primitive modernism.

By Josef Frank, Svenskt Tenn
Located in The Hague, NL
This elegant rosewood cabinet was designed by Josef Frank for Svenskt Tenn in the late 1930's. In the Svensk Tenn archive's furniture book, Estrid Ericson (the founder of Svenskt Tenn) has made a pencil sketch of the cabinet and written "designed for the King", Gustaf V, likely for his 80th birthday in 1938. So this particular model 792 also became known as the Gustav V model. The rare cabinet on offer here was produced by Svenskt Tenn in Sweden in the early 1950s. The model was usually produced in pyramid mahogany, only a few pieces were made in rosewood. The cabinet has double doors, veneered in mirorred rosewood, with a solid oak interior with a total of 10 pull-out drawers. Brass key and round brass door hinges...
