Louis XV Marquetry Bombe Commode / Chest of Drawers, French, 19th Century

About the Item

This beautiful Louis XV Bombe commode dates back to the 19th century and features elaborately inlaid marquetry work with a floral design that covers the two front drawers as well as both sides. The term bombe is a translation from the French word for ‘curved,’ in this instance of course referring to the beautiful contours seen throughout the piece including the marble top. The piece also features gorgeous drawer pulls, mounts, and shoes. This would make an excellent accent piece to any room. The piece is part of the collection from The French Antique Shop, a fourth generation antique store in the heart of the French Quarter of New Orleans. A space that was created and curated at first by Marie and Marcelle and Granet. Their first shop was located in the heart of Paris, and opened in 1919 after they migrated to Paris from Romania post World War I. Shortly after establishing themselves in Paris, as a Jewish family they were forced to flee in the late 1930s before World War II. Marie and Marcel opened up their shop in New Orleans in 1939, the city in which this antique collection has grown and continues to flourish. The store is now run by the third and fourth generation, Marc, Michael, and Brian Friedlander, and is a highly curated space filled with rare antiquities, fine antique lighting, eclectic fixtures, and everything in between. We have imported all the antique items in our collection directly from France.
