About the Item

19th century French Bookcase ~ Cylinder Secretary is a stately reminder of a bygone era! Hand-crafted by talented cabinetmakers from a mixture of indigenous and imported woods, it features a stately neoclassical architecture with a bold multi-tiered crown overlooking the upper cabinet which was fitted with full length steel barrel hinges and comprised of six chamfered panels on each door. Each door opens wide thanks to full length steel barrel hinges, revealing a spacious upper tier interior with an original shelf. Note the hand-forged lock and clasp mechanism. Just underneath the top tier, a cylinder desk appears, with tailored molding when closed, and when rotated back, reveals a nice work area with interior drawers, plus a writing surface that slides out like a drawer, accessed with steel bale pulls. Below the desk portion is a full size commode or chest of drawers, each fitted with elaborately detailed bale pulls with guards and at the center of each drawer, a finely made key guard. Bold molding and bun feet complete the facade, with finely chamfered panels appearing on each side making this wonderful heirloom piece exquisite from any angle! Note the hand-hewn solid planks on the back side. circa 1850s. Measures 85H x 48W x 25D; writing surface 30H
