About the Item

“André” Dining Table by Afra Scarpa for Gavina, 1968 – Italian Modernist Design with Industrial Elegance A rare and iconic piece of Italian design history, the “André” dining table, designed by Afra and Tobia Scarpa in 1968 for the manifacture Gavina, perfectly embodies the aesthetic clarity and modernist rigour of the post-war Italian design movement. Elegant Industrial Structure The table features a striking architectural frame in chromed tubular steel, with four cylindrical legs supporting a gridded metal top structure. This grid, cleanly intersected and precisely engineered, adds an elegant geometric rhythm to the piece and also acts as a support system for the top. The top is made of a smoked glass sheet (vetro fumé), creating a beautiful contrast with the reflective chrome and allowing the sculptural base to remain fully visible. This transparent interplay between materials enhances the feeling of lightness and architectural purity. Minimal yet expressive, the “André” table is a true representation of Afra Scarpa's ability to balance functionality and sculptural elegance. The visible grid under the glass recalls a Bauhaus-like rationalism, while retaining the warmth and proportions characteristic of Italian design. On one of the structure's compartments is still slightly the outline of the original Gavina label, a sign of authenticity and provenance. Whether used as a dining table, desk, or design centerpiece, this piece integrates seamlessly into modern, industrial, or minimalist interiors, while equally capable of standing out in classic mid-century collections
