'Andre' Square Dining Table by Tobia Scarpa for Knoll

About the Item

Designed in 1967 for Gavina, the "Andre" dining table by Tobia Scarpa produced by Knoll. Chromed steel frame and chromed tubular steel legs, round black leather pads on top of legs supporting glass, large square half inch black glass top. Looks fantastic with Mies van der Rohe Brno chairs. Shown here with four chairs but each side can fit two chairs to seat 8 comfortably. The son of the famous Italian architect Carlo Scarpa, Tobia Scarpa trained in Venice before launching his career as a as a designer of lamps, furniture and glass objects. In the early 1960s, he began to design modern furniture based on the principles of Le Corbusier. He and his wife Afra, designed for several of the biggest names in Italian design including Cassina and Gavina SpA, which his father directed.

    Wear consistent with age and use. Very good. Chrome has been hand polished and has a clear bright finish. Black glass top with no chips, a few scratches.

    Italian American modernist design expandable round dining table by Adolfo Genovese of F. & G. Handmade Furniture Co. 121 First Street East Cambridge, MA. This table was made late 1940s-early 1950s. The base is a walnut N- or Z- form frame of three panels each having a lattice-like design of carved three-dimensional flock of seagulls in flight. Perfect not only for a beach house! The 52 inch diameter round two part top has a 2.5 inch flat edge apron all around and a very unusual grain of bird's eye figured walnut. The table expands to 88 inches long by 52 inches wide with two 18 inch leaves. Beautifully restored and ready to place. See image 12 for this table in its original home circa 1954.
