Damien Hirst Butterfly Original Drawing on Paper, ca. 1990’s

About the Item

Damien Hirst (b. 1965) is a British conceptual artist and provocateur who rose to prominence as one of the Young British Artists (YBA) movement of the late 1980’s and early 1990’s. This iconic artist is known for his controversial and sometimes disturbing approach to life and death. He is considered today as one of the leading and most successful artists of his generation. For Hirst, one his main themes focussed on butterfflies which symbolize the fragility of life, death and resurrection, a motif he debuted when he was only 26 years old. He used it as a means to address man’s obsession with mortality and his unwillingness to confront it. His arresting installation, for example, consisted of a sealed glass room filled with butterflies fluttering around till they dropped to the floor from exhaustion and died. This present work consists of an original drawing on paper of a butterfly, an enduring image for which he is famous. It comes in a magnificent metal frame with bevelled mirrors. The condition is excellent. DIMENSIONS: 14.13 in. (35.8 cm.) X 17.25 in. (43.8 cm.) with frame 7.5 in. (19 cm.) X 9.5 in. (24.1 cm.) image only
