Rare Gildas Berthelot “Le Grand Soir” Organic Modern Console Table, 2010
About the Item
This rare and outstanding console was handcrafted by the gifted French cabinetmaker and sculptor, Gildas Berthelot, an artist who has forged a unique path in the world of contemporary design over the past thirty years. It is one of the finest examples of the organic modern style, a design philosophy that seeks to bridge the gap between the contemporary and the organic. More than just another piece of modern furniture, it is an exemplary sculptural masterpiece that uses natural forms and arabesque-like shapes and curves to create a sensual organism that is artistic yet functional.
Berthelot titled this creation “Le Grand Soir” (The Grand Evening). Indeed, it is grand. He made it in August 2010 as a 2nd version of a prototype. It is made from solid hardwood black walnut and has two drawers. Apart from one minor and barely discernible scratch, it is otherwise in excellent condition, almost like new in our opinion.
A native of France, Berthelot (b. 1961) is a graduate of the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris and the Universite du Quebec a Montreal (UQAM). He currently lives and works in Montreal, Canada.
