Earl McCutcheon Slumped Fused Laminated Metal Inlaid Glass Sculptural Charger

About the Item

Earl McCutcheon was a pioneer in the studio glass movement who spent 40 years at the University of Ga. In the 1950's he was among the most influential experimental glass makers in the U.S. and this charger is an extraordinarily successful example incorporating all four of the complex techniques he used. Please reference examples in the Corning Museum of Glass collections, the Georgia Museum of Art and online in the New Georgia Encyclopedia to help contextualize the importance, scale and power of this artwork. In particular, I call attention to the starburst patterns which were created by carefully placing metal wire to create the radiating pattern and then laminating a layer of glass over the top. The resulting temperature variation caused glass bubbling and several of the large ones are directly over the center of the radiating bursts creating a dimensionality to the sculpture that is seldom encountered in fused glass, even over half a century later. The work is sophisticated in it's approach to glass as a medium as a medium of reflections. The surface appears to share two mirrored reflections, one of yellow flowers in a green field and the second both bright and shadowed stars from an evening sky. This is the type image one might rarely see reflected upon a glass surface during a moonlight evening, but that few would contemplate or be capable of replicating as glass art. Wow! Southern Art. (Photography stand not included).
