Shackleton was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire in 2012 for his efforts as an artist for services to the conservation of wildlife. A retrospective exhibition of his "Polar Art" depicting creatures from the Arctic and Antarctic was held at the Scott Polar Research Institute in 2007.
