Austrian 19th Century Patinated Bronze, Giltwood and Ebony Wall Plaque
Located in West Palm Beach, FL
An exceptional and most decorative Austrian 19th century patinated bronze, giltwood and Ebony wall plaque signed K. Sterrer. The striking wall decor is centered by the wonderfully executed patinated bronze plaque depicting a handsome sculptor in his atelier draped in a flowing garment working on a bust of a woman resting on a stool while holding his hammer and chisel. He is standing on a wall bracket like element with an impressive open winged eagle above an acorn finial, a tied carpenter's square and a tied bell hammer with a caliper and fine foliate branches at his feet. In the background is a beautiful maiden also draped in a wonderful flowing garment siting with her legs crossed on the plinth of a capital where another maiden, possibly a statue, is standing with a globe and sextant in her hand with plaques, busts, wings and curtains above. The plaque is set within an elegant mottled giltwood frame with beautiful richly carved wrap around berried laurel bands with a fine angled ebonized Fruitwood border. All original gilt and patina throughout.

Length: 8” (without beard)
Height: 4”
Width: 5.5”
ABOUT
A Japanese Edo Period (1603-1868) Ko-jo Mask of an Old Man refers to a traditional theatrical or ceremonial mask crafted during Japan’s Edo period (1603–1868). Here's a breakdown of what this object typically represents and why it's significant:
The term "Ko-jo" (or Kojo) roughly translates to "old man" or "aged person" in Japanese. A Ko-jo mask often portrays the face of an elderly man, typically with exaggerated age features: deep wrinkles, sagging skin, a long nose, bushy eyebrows, and sometimes a beard. These masks are usually used in Noh, Kyogen, or folk performances, and occasionally in Shinto rituals.
In Noh theater, masks are used to express character types, moods, and spiritual roles. The Ko-jo mask might represent a wise elder, a spirit of age and wisdom, or even a deity.
In Kyogen, which is the comedic counterpart to Noh, old-man masks are used more playfully, often satirizing elderly characters in lighthearted scenes.
The Ko-jo mask may also symbolize ancestral reverence or longevity, tying it to folk beliefs and ritual performances.

This painting as mentioned is the circle of Sir William Beechey
Sir William Beechey RA (12 December 1753 – 28 January 1839) was a leading English portraitist during the golden age of British painting.
Early life
Beechey was born at Burford, Oxfordshire, on 12 December 1753, the son of William Beechey, a solicitor, and his wife Hannah Read. Both parents died when he was still quite young, and he and his siblings were brought up by his uncle Samuel, a solicitor who lived in nearby Chipping Norton. The uncle was determined that the young Beechey should likewise follow a career in the law, and at an appropriate age he was entered as a clerk with a conveyancer near Stow-on-the-Wold. But as The Monthly Mirror later recorded in July 1798, he was: "Early foredoomed his [uncle's] soul to cross/ And paint a picture where he should engross."
Beechey was admitted to the Royal Academy Schools in 1772, where he is thought to have studied under Johan Zoffany. He first exhibited at the Academy in 1776. His earliest surviving portraits are small-scale full-length and conversation pieces which are reminiscent of Zoffany.
In 1782, he moved to Norwich, where he gained several commissions, including a portrait of Sir John...
