Born in Suffolk and baptized in Ipswich on August 21, 1768, he entered the Royal Academy Schools in 1785 at age sixteen. Wood specialized in watercolour on ivory, creating over 1,200 miniatures between 1790 and 1808, as detailed in his meticulous fee books preserved at the Victoria and Albert Museum. He worked primarily in London but also in Bristol (1791, 1803) and Gloucester (1798). A founder and president (1808–09) of the Associated Artists in Water Colours, he sought to elevate the status of miniature and watercolour portraiture.
