About the Item
19th century Castel Sant'Angelo
Oil on canvas, 49 x 58.5 cm
The analyzed painting portrays a pleasant view of the city of Rome. Taken from the bank of the Tiber, Castel Sant'Angelo is represented in the foreground, while in the distance you can see the domes of St. Peter's Basilica. Castel Sant'Angelo or Mole Adrianorum, also known as Hadrian's Mausoleum, was begun by the emperor Hadrian in 125 as his funeral mausoleum, and completed by Antonino Pio in 139. In front of the building is the pons Aelius, now the Sant'Angelo bridge , which with its arches is reflected in the waters of the Tiber, generating pleasant plays of color.
The painting is part of the genre of views in vogue during the Grand Tour, made as a reminder of the famous monuments visited to bring to their homes. Italy was the preferred destination for travelers, artists and intellectuals; Rome, Florence and Naples were the essential destinations both for the completion of the education of young European aristocrats and for the numerous artists attracted by the echo of classical antiquities and the charm of archaeological remains. The painting under analysis combines the serene everyday life of the two fishermen, almost indifferent to the surrounding landscape, with the precision of the detailed drawing, such as the statue of the Archangel Michael on the top of the building or the moored boats. The painting bears a traditional attribution to François Marius Granet (Aix-en-Provence, 1775 - 1849). The painter was a pupil of David but from 1802 to 1819 he lived in Rome, as evidenced by a series of paintings depicting views of the city and especially of the Roman countryside (Ponte San Rocco in Tivoli, 1810-20, MoMA, New York), and then return there between 1825 and 1830. In the Eternal City Granet devoted himself to landscape painting, inspired by the landscape painting of Gaspard Dughet and Van Lint...
