About the Item
Landscape with resting shepherdess, sheep and cow, Tschaggeny 1849, signed and dated lower right by the Flemish Romantic painter and engraver Charles Philogene Tschaggeny, Bruxelles 1815-1894.
This antique oil on oak panel painting, set in modern carved gilt-wood frame, depicts a resting shepherdess seated in the shade of a tree, stroking a cow. In front of them sits a sheep with a little lamb. The foreground scene is framed by a rural landscape with architecture in the background.
In excellent condition, set within a carved and gilded wooden frame, this antique Belgian painting comes from a private collection in Milan.
Charles Philogène Tschaggeny received his training from the noted painter Eugene Verboeckhoven before leaving for Antwerp in 1836 where he worked with Nicaise de Keyzer and Henri Leys.
Tschaggeny largely painted horses, studying their anatomy in detail. He was recognized as one of the best horse painters during his own lifetime. Active as Animalier Romantic painter and engraver in the Netherlands, where he won a gold medal at the Brussels Salon in 1845 and in 1846 at the Antwerp Salon, but in England too, where he moved in the years 1848-1849 .
His patrons included King Wilhelm II of the Netherlands, Leopold I of Belgium and Marie-Henriette of Austria. The English Queen Victoria too, his great admirer, in 1851 bought a painting for his collection.
In 1865 Tschaggeny became a member of the Royal Academy.
His works can be found in the Royal museum of fine arts Brussels and The National Gallery London.

18th Century, Venetian School Italian Landscape Oversize Painting
Located in Milano, MI
Early 18th century Italian Venetian inland painting, a large size oil on canvas Baroque mountain landscape with stream, bridge, waterfall, wayfarers and a village in the background. The woodland is animated by figures, a caravan with horsemen fishermen. This monumental Italian Baroque landscape painting has a strong impact and an excellent composition balance, as it depicts in the center the luminous perspective of a fortified village, whose side wings consist of two mountain rocks with dark wooded vegetation crowded by characters, horsemen, paths, streams. On the left side, with respect to the observer, there is a path that runs alongside a stream that flows into a waterfall in the center of the composition. from a caravan of travelers on foot and on horseback traveling along it in both directions: going up the slope on the mountainous coast you can see a church and a village near the top. The right part of the painting depicts a more sparse and dry vegetation, painted in the chromatic tones of ocher, inside of which there are dead plant, dry branches and a smaller number of figures on the rugged mountain. The iconographic inspiration of this wooded representation seems to be in the large trunk of the withered conifer in a central position, which represents a dead tree, as a? reminder of the transience of everything in life, whose phases are summarized in the two mountainous coasts. In the background a village painted in light and soft blue colors, in stark contrast to the previous scene, seems to reassure and project us into a future season.
With a suggestive theatrical effect, more than 250 cm wide, this Baroque Italian painting comes from a private collection of Milan, the canvas has been lined and shows minor painting retouches at a horizontal seam of the canvas. It is unframed, it has just a wooden profile covering the canvas edge.
It is an antique Italian landscape, the perfect opportunity to make a statement. Get the perfect size painting for a great living room, to create that eye-catching focal point. You can make an impact with a single large work by hanging this early 18th century Italian Baroque painting...

Shepherd with Flock in a Pastoral Landscape (1821)
Oil on canvas Signed lower left "PG Van Os f 1821"
Item # 204GPP23A
An extensive and brilliantly detailed scene, this fine woodland pastoral landscape highlights the ability of Pieter Gerardus van Os to manipulate light for dramatic and somewhat ecclesiastical effect. There is a certain other-worldly insinuation in the golden light as it pierces the dense cover of the leaves to highlight the shepherd and his flock as the focal point for the painting. Here we find the young boy entirely at peace on the bank surrounded by long golden grasses with his hat and staff tossed aside while watching the action of the small waterfall on the otherwise tranquil stream. His small dog stands beside him while the sheep graze carelessly, each showing total disregard for the two men and their dog hunting in shadows of the woods behind them. Across the bank a pair of unattended billy goats graze on the trees of the deeply shaded forest floor.
There is a harmony and perfect sense of balance in this intricately detailed scene, an effective infusion of the transcendental into a quiet landscape scene. The work is signed lower left in his typical scrawling script "PG [intertwined] Van Os f 1821" and the back of the frame retains an early Christie's label. It is presented in a very fine carved giltwood frame.
PIETER GERARDUS VAN OS
Born in The Hague on October 8th of 1776 into the renowned Van Os family of painters, Pieter would spend his early years studying under his father Jan together with his brother Georgius Johannes Jacobus (Dutch, 1782-1861) in their father's studio. The three men had remarkable careers and would become some of the most influential painters in the Netherlands throughout the first half of the 19th century. Unlike his brother and father, Pieter moved away from still-life paintings and focused his work on rural landscapes of the Dutch countryside. He was self-taught in this pursuit, first as a copyist of the renowned Dutch "Golden Age" painters Karel Dujardin (Dutch, 1626-1678) and Paulus Potter (Dutch, 1625-1654) while also being heavily influenced by the landscape work of Jacob van Ruisdael and the allegorical landscapes of Nicolaes Pieterszoon Berchem. From his studio in Amsterdam, Pieter taught such notable pupils as Wouterus Verschuur...
