About the Item

GERMAN SCHOOL 19th Century "The Blind Fiddler" Oil on canvas signed lower left "F. Ortlich, München ref. 410EPP02A 52 7/8" H x 42 3/4" W x 3 1/2" D [frame] 43 3/8" H x 34 1/2" W [canvas] A lovely 19th century genre scene from the German Realist school, this very finely painted example depicts a young woman leading a blind fiddler towards the outdoor seating at a restaurant. Patrons are busily engaged in conversation under dappled sunlight, sharing drinks and food in the cool autumn air as the beginning of fall arrives with leaves turning and scattered across the stone walkways. The young woman, likely a waitress at the establishment, holds the elderly man's fiddle in her hand and glances into the space to find the best spot for him to set up. He holds onto the crook of her arm while she reassuringly grasps his jacket. The use of sunlight and shadows is positively brilliant and sets the mood for the scene. The work is signed in the lower left corner "F. Ortlich / München" and remains in fine original condition. Condition: Surface cleaned by our conservator, sealed in a traditional Dammar varnish. Craquelure throughout the surface. Spot of inpainting to the body of the fiddle (lower portion), touch ups around the edges where the frame rubs, other very small touchups visible under UV. Old frame, likely original, with loss to gilding and gold paint in numerous areas: chipping, separations, etc. Ready to place. “Young Naval Conscript” Antique French Painting by Julien Le Blant
Located in Shippensburg, PA
JULIEN LE BLANT French, 1851-1936 "Le Départ des Conscrits" (1888) Oil on canvas Signed lower left "J. Le Blant" Item # 301OIV16Z A moving study of a very young man hugging and kissing his father goodbye as the French Navy has arrived at his home to collect him for conscription to military service. His mother grips a hankerchief in one hand as she watches her teenage son with a complex expression that bridges grief and perhaps anger. His younger brother likely does not grasp the totality of the situation, dragging behind his feet a toy boat. The bright colors and vibrant life of the rural farm is juxtaposed against a deep sorrow. The present example dates from 1888 and was mentioned in the Gazette anecdotique et Littéraire of the same year. It is included in the ongoing catalogue research project on the works of Julien Le Blant by Dominique Formaz and is documented at Leblant. com JULIEN LE BLANT Julien Le Blant studied under E. Girard and made his debut at Salon in 1874. His work was regularly recognized, ultimately receiving the gold medal at the 1889 Exposition Universelle. He was made Chevalier of the Légion d'Honneur in 1885. The body of his work largely focuses on military scenes, particularly of the French Revolution, but also scenes of the First World War later in life. He completed hundreds of illustrations for a great number of books, including Les Chouans (Honoré de Balzac), Chevalier des Touches (Barbey d'Aurevilly), and Premier Grenadier de France (Paul Dérouléde) to name a few. His work is held in major museum collections and institutions around the world. For serious collectors of militarism and of the Romantic painters of the period, this is a simply outstanding investment grade selection. Works by Julien Le Blant very rarely make their way to the the open market.
