Fiddler and Gypsy Woman Large KPM Porcelain Plaque After Louis Gallait

About the Item

Our very large plaque, 20 by 26.5 inches (51 by 67 cm), is known as the Fiddler and Gypsy Woman, and Consolation, after the painting by Louis Gallait (Belgian, 1810-1887) that resides in the collection of the National Museum in Warsaw. Wonderfully painted by F. Schmidt with signature in lower right corner. It resides in a period giltwood frame measuring 30 by 35.75 inches. Impressed KPM, scepter and capital F on verso. Literature: KPM Plaques: Gaining an Insight into the Art of Painting on Porcelain, Sean Shakrovski and Vera Rininberg, p. 117, fig 38. The original painting by Gallait is said to have been completed in 1851. In this emotional and touching work, siblings are resting on the slab of a grave. The brother is playing the violin while his sister rests her head on his knee. A version of the painting resides in the collection of the Walters Art Gallery in Baltimore. Other interpretations of this work have suggested this moving scene depicts a violinist soothing his wife's grief or longing for a loved one.
