19th Century Oil Painting of Pansies in Glass Vase with Giltwood Frame

About the Item

This delicate still life captures a vibrant bouquet of pansies in full bloom, arranged informally in a simple glass vase. Rendered in oil on canvas, the composition celebrates the fragile beauty and natural asymmetry of these beloved garden flowers, painted with remarkable attention to color and texture. Each bloom is meticulously detailed, from the velvety purples and deep burgundies to the soft yellows and creamy whites, all set against a dark, moody background that enhances the luminous effect of the petals. The artist has masterfully conveyed the transparency of the glass and the reflection of the stems submerged in water, creating a subtle interplay of light and shadow on the table surface. One pansy lies gently on the table, reinforcing the natural, almost poetic quality of the composition. The painting is signed in the lower left corner, possibly reading “G. Quinson” or a similar name, and likely dates to the late 19th century, around 1880–1900, based on the style of brushwork, the aged canvas, and the original giltwood frame. The reverse reveals an untouched, traditional wooden stretcher and nails consistent with that period. This charming floral study would make an elegant addition to any collection of antique paintings or a refined interior space.
