Ricardo Santamaría – Biography
Born 1920 in Zaragoza-Aragón (Spain) / died 2013 in Southern France.
1940s: studies at the “Escuela de Artes y Oficios” in Zaragoza –
Santamaría proves his versatile skills as a conservator-restorer (e.g. of Gothic mosaics), gilder and sculptor.
In the 1960s the artist is determined to shake up the rigid society of the post-war years (Manifiesto de Riglos).
He is also a founding member of the “Grupo Zaragoza”.
In his work as an artist Ricardo Santamaría passes through Figurative, Realist, Late Impressionist and Neocubist stages before settling on Abstract Art.
Following an extended confrontation with the Francoist regime, during which he even received anonymous threats at his home address, Santamaría decides that he can no longer tolerate the Spanish government’s massive control of the national art scene and moves to France in the late 1960s.
He plays a key role in the founding of the “Grupo Zaragoza” in the 1960s, an interdisciplinary art movement that also integrates theatre, music, cinematography, etc. In accordance with this spirit, Santamaría works not only as a sculptor but also creates so-called “esculto-pinturas”, which strive to combine the art forms of sculpting and painting. The artist also experiments with different materials.
This approach is revolutionary for the time and is therefore naturally regarded as politically suspicious in Fascist Spain.
The following four concepts are of central significance for Santamaría’s artistic oeuvre:
1. freedom as an essential prerequisite for any form of creativity
2. experimental art forms
3. transcendence
4. ethical responsibility
Spirituality is also a crucial aspect of his way of thinking. The artist is strongly influenced by the spiritual “Mudéjar” culture, which is based on authentic abstraction (to him, arabesque art transcends mere decoration and represents pure abstraction with a profound aesthetic and metaphysical dimension – cf. the Aljaferia Palace in Zaragoza).
Works by artists such as Paul Klee and Henri Matisse, incidentally, reveal a significant “arabesque influence” as well.
Santamaría believes that in order to play an active role, art needs to merge opposites:
caos-orden; unitario-disperso; racional-instinctivo; constructivismo-destructivismo, etc.
Furthermore, he is convinced that dogmatic views inevitably lead to stagnation and sclerosis (which is also why he never associates with political parties, unlike many artists at the time). Perhaps Santamaría’s ideals are best described as “timeless spirituality” (espiritualidad intemporal). His works are characterised by uncompromising authenticity that defies any imitation.

His original sculptures, which convey a certain “Belleza de lo Humilde”, are especially remarkable.
The artist typically combines stark contrasts: construction-destruction; arabesque-restrained; polychrome-monochrome; rhythm-tension.
Santamaría’s works often represent an interplay of “humildad” (humility, restrained simplicity) and “audacia inventiva” (inventive audacity, experimental conceptualisation).

Ricardo Santamaria
Born in 1920 in Saragosse, Spain, Ricardo Santamaria is an artist influenced by his work as a woodworker and his Spanish roots to produce pieces that Dubuffet could have qualified as art brut. Santamaria has always worked seamlessly between painting and sculpture throughout his career. He started as a woodworker and was naturally driven to sculpture, but his aesthetical research drove him to explore painting and its possible associations with sculpture. Santamaria is a founding member of the Group of Zaragoza.

Short Biography:
Wolfgang E. Biedermann was born in 1940 in Hannover - dece. 2008 in Leipzig
Already as a high school student Wolfgang E. Biedermann's artistic talent was recognized by Ursula Mattheuer-Neustädt.
She promoted him to evening studies at the Academy of Visual Arts (HGB) Leipzig.
From 1961 Biedermann studied at the HGB in the specialist class for free graphics and painting with Gerhard Kurt Müller, completing his studies in 1967.
Since 1968 Biedermann was active as a freelance artist in Leipzig.
He undertook study trips to Poland, France and Indonesia, as well as to the USSR and the USA.
From 1968 to 1991 he was a member of the Association of Visual Artists of the GDR and since 1996 a member of the Free Academy of Arts in Leipzig.
The unique encounter with the German action artist Joseph Beuys had a great impact on Biedermann.
The artistic work of Wolfgang E. Biedermann spanned from 1960 to 2008.
His œuvre is characterized by the development of his own technique.
In addition to drawings and sketches of the early work for study purposes he dealt over the years primarily with printing practices.
He produced numerous abstract paintings and works on paper using color etching and silkscreen processes as well as multi-plate overprinting.
Biedermann relied on different layering by means of various techniques of graphics and painting.
He dealt extensively with overdrawing and overpainting his works. Repeating motifs are symbols, signs, ciphers and writings, which are based on Asian calligraphy.
Biedermann dealt just as intensively with the content of philosophical writings by Peter Sloterdijk and with letters from the estate of Friedrich Schiller,
which he transposed into the paintings. His color-intensive paintings reflect "inner landscapes". Klaus Werner coined this term as early as 1980 for the complete works of Wolfgang E. Biedermann.
Since 1977 Wolfgang E. Biedermann presented his artworks at various exhibitions.
On the occasion of his 50th birthday, the Lindenau Museum in Altenburg exhibited a comprehensive selection of 130 works in 1990.
NordLB - Art, Hannover accompanied his further creative process for almost ten years with work locations in Berlin (Sony Center), Singapore, Zurich and Hamburg.
At the EXPO 2000 in Hanover, twelve of his large-scale works were on display in the German pavilion.
Parts of his œuvre have also been exhibited outside Germany in Tokyo, Paris, Damascus, Bilbao, Listovel, Mulhouse, Grenchen, Basel and Fredrikstad, among other places.
