About the Item
A remarkable statement of hope and resilience, this vivid and colorful depiction of a nude Adam seated amidst a profusion of flora and fauna was painted in the midst of World War II when Denmark was occupied by the Nazis and the end of the war was still years away. The painting was made by Wilfred Peter Glud, whose career stretched from the 1910s-1940s. This might be considered his swan song, executed not long before he died. Bucolic and ambitious, Glud manages to capture an era of innocence before the fall: Adam and the variety of animals around him, all vividly portrayed in a colorful palette, seem entirely content and at peace. The medium is oil on canvas.
