About the Item
Rare, large and very beautiful oil painting by Jules Dupré (1811-1889), a French artist famous for his dramatic paintings of forests around Paris and one of the leaders of the Barbizon School of landscape painters. Deep, rich colors, moving rendition of the French countryside. Among his chief works are the "Morning and Evening" at the Musée du Louvre, and the early "Crossing the Bridge" in the Wallace Collection Museum. His timeless, Classic works form part of the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City and the Washington DC National Gallery.
Oil on canvas.
Includes original exquisite giltwood frame.
This painting was purchased over 20 years ago from the Estate of a French collector. It is not signed, which is not in any way unusual for a painting of that period. Jules Dupré lived from 1811 to 1889. This work is typical of the landscapes he favored in his earlier career, probably in his 20s.
The painting has a good size, and is a very beautiful rendering of Jules Dupré’s subject of interest, this “favourite” tree. The colours are deep and perfectly balanced. One feels drawn to the place and loses oneself in the feeling of the scene, as intended by the School of Barbizon artist.
The frame seems to have previously been used for a painting by Bastien Lepage, and retains a remnant of a reference to this artist and the date 1889, though upside down behind the frame. The frame is a beautiful gilt wood frame, it is overall in very good condition and has been restored.
