About the Item

A bunch of dahlias in a Japanese vase, signed upper left A.MELOT, dated 1883. Louis Auguste MELOT, flower painter died 1899. The painter's decision to split the vase down the middle for his composition is its his doing. The canvas has not been shortened. A Montparnasse style frame, circa 1930. Alfred Melot was born on 19 October 1854 in Thoissey (Ain), the son of Hippolyte Melot and Philiberte Clair. He entered the Collège de Thoissey in 1864. Canon Paul Taconnet (1827-1908) introduced him to drawing and etching. Alfred Melot soon abandoned this technique in favour of oils and watercolours. In 1874, he took part in his first exhibition organised by the Société anonyme des peintres, sculpteurs et graveurs in the former salons of the photographer Nadar in Paris. After passing his baccalauréat, he enrolled at the Faculty of Law in Paris. However, he was more assiduous in visiting museums and the studios of Alexandre Cabanel (1823-1889) and Henri Lehmann (1814-1882). The following year, he continued his law studies at the new faculty in Lyon, living at 8, rue des prêtres, in the 9th arrondissement. He spent some time in Switzerland, from where he brought back many pen-and-ink sketches that would inspire his workAlfred Melot then embarked on a career as a landscape painter. He devoted his life to depicting the many aspects of his small country, particularly the banks of the Saône, influenced in his early days by the landscapes of Corot (1796-1875) and the skies of Turner (1775-1851) and later by Auguste Ravier (1814-1895). A contemporary of the great movements that revolutionised painting, such as his friend, the painter Joannès Drevet (1854-1940), Alfred Melot did not seek to raise his profile. Nevertheless, he left behind a considerable and select body of work, highly representative of the landscape as it was conceived at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries. However, he did participate in numerous salons in Bourg-en-Bresse, Geneva, Mâcon and Lyon.

Flower Still Life with Dahlias, Oil on Canvas, Gaston Geleyn, Dated 1934
Located in Casteren, Noord-Brabant
Flower still life with dahlias, in beautiful, vibrant colors. Oil on canvas. The round format is very unusual. Frame and canvas are an original whole. The painting is signed in the paint on the lower right and dated, 1934. The painting is framed behind anti-reflective glass, which means that the colors are beautifully preserved. The frame is subtly carved in Art Deco style. A similar painting by the same painter is depicted in an old exhibition book by this painter. See picture. His work work has also been purchased by various museums. The book about Gaston Geleyn is beautifully illustrated, 170 pages and it is about the life and work of the artist. The book was published in 1933. Book is supplied with the painting. More information about the Gaston Geleyn follows below. Source: Paul Piron 'Art in Belgium'. GELEYN, Gaston (Brussels, 1892 - Grimbergen 1949). Painter. Stayed with a great uncle in Paris until he was 16 years old.
