Mary Rischgitz
Single Dahlias Bouquet - British Victorian floral still life exh. oil painting

1886

About the Item

This wonderful exhibited British Victorian floral still life oil painting is by female artist and flower painter Mary Rischgitz. Painted in 1886 it was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1887. It is a stunning opulent bouquet of delicate single dahlias in shades of red and white in a shiny brass vase on a table. A really lovely painting harking back to the Golden Age of Dutch flower paintings, by a gifted female artist who exhibited extensively throughout her artistic career. This painting has inspired me to try growing single dahlias from seed this year as they are so beautiful. Signed lower left. Provenance: Exhibited: Royal Academy 1887 No. 193 'Single Dahlias'. Ex Christies 1999 and 2001. Condition. Oil on canvas, 40 inches by 30 inches unframed and in good condition. Frame. Housed in an ornate gilt frame, 48 inches by 38 inches framed and in good condition. Mary Rischgitz (Exh. 1883-1906) was a London based flower and portrait painter. She was a prolific exhibitor: Royal Society of Artists, Birmingham 6, Walker Art Gallery Liverpool 3, Manchester City Art Gallery 1, Royal Academy 7, Royal Society of British Artists 7, Royal Institute of Oil Painters 2, Society of Women Artists 2.

Oil on canvas, signed and dated 2018. French handmade Delf wooden frame, dark bronze patina with gold leaf. Unframed size: 19.7 inches high x 24.02 inches wide. Framed size: 28 inches high x 32.3 inches wide x 1.25 inches deep. Sold framed. Stefaan was gifted this skull by a friend, whose carpenter father found many years ago in a false ceiling. The skull sat in his workshop and was eventually named “Gilda”. The composition is unusual in its stark simplicity that speaks to the inevitable death we all face. Fascinating without being morbid, the arrangement is simple yet bold. Note the extraordinary brushwork detailed in the shroud, as well as the intricacies of the skull. The slash of cobalt blue in the background provides an ethereal quality. The title is adapted from Shakespeare’s Hamlet and is the artist’s inside joke on the character “Guildenstern” vs “Gilda”. Part of the title can be seen in the lower right quadrant of the painting. Compared to “Vanitas”, painted in 2000, the artist’s evolution in form and execution is most evident in this 2018 work. This painting is available for viewing at The Elemental Garden...
