Secondo la legislazione italiana vigente, qualsiasi opera d'arte creata oltre 50 anni fa richiede una licenza governativa per l'esportazione chiamata Belle Arti. Silvio Poma (Trescore Balneario 1840 - Turate 1932) is known as a landscape painter with a repertoire of lake views, often traveling to Lake Como and the small village of Lierna to paint, intimist in character, also showing the influence of his contemporary Filippo Carcano in their realistic approach. The period from 1883 onward saw an increase in activity with systematic presentation of works in national exhibitions and lasting success in the art market. He participated as a volunteer in the Second War of Independence and later took up military life, but in 1866 he was discharged from the army after contracting malaria. Upon his return to Milan he attended the studios of Giovan Battista Lelli and Gerolamo Induno, both soldier-painters with whom he had come into contact during the 1859 military campaign. He made his debut at the Brera Exposition of Fine Arts in 1869, but his first official awards did not come until the middle of the following decade: in 1876 he won the Mylius Prize of the Brera Academy of Fine Arts with a canvas of a historical subject set in a large natural setting of romantic taste entitled Macbeth meets in the Dunscinane woods the wargs who prey on his throne; in 1877 one of his landscapes was purchased at the National Exposition in Naples by Victor Emmanuel II. He was buried at the Maggiore Cemetery in Milan, where his remains were later collected in a small cell. The public purchase by King Victor Emmanuel II for his private collection will give him international fame among the royal families of the epca. At the 1881 Milan National Exposition he presented: View of Lake Lecco and the tip of Bellagio (known as La Punta di Bellagio); Abbadia on Lake Lecco; Riva near Abbadia; Lake Lecco at Lierna; Monterosso; Punta di Palianzo, Lake Maggiore; at the 1883 Milan National Exposition, A bosco luganese; Chestnut Forest; Lake Pescate; at the 1883 Rome Exposition; Lake Garda; Lake Pescate; at the 1884 Turin Exposition: Pianazzo Forest in Luganese Forest; Shore of Vercurago; Monte Rosa; vicinity of Sesto Calende; Lake Lugano, branch of Agno ; Milan National Exhibition of 1886: The Horns of Canto di Valmadrera; Mount San Martino; Mount Legnane; Panorama of Lecco; at the 1887 Venice Exposition :The Bridge of Lecco; Pescarenico suil'Adda and On the Lake''; and at the 1888 Bologna Exposition: Heights of Menaggio and Pescarenico and Mount San Martino.

Landscape Painting "Shepherd & Flock" by Pieter Gerardus Van Os circa 1821
Located in Shippensburg, PA
PIETER GERARDUS VAN OS Dutch, 1776-1839 Shepherd with Flock in a Pastoral Landscape (1821) Oil on canvas Signed lower left "PG Van Os f 1821" Item # 204GPP23A An extensive and brilliantly detailed scene, this fine woodland pastoral landscape highlights the ability of Pieter Gerardus van Os to manipulate light for dramatic and somewhat ecclesiastical effect. There is a certain other-worldly insinuation in the golden light as it pierces the dense cover of the leaves to highlight the shepherd and his flock as the focal point for the painting. Here we find the young boy entirely at peace on the bank surrounded by long golden grasses with his hat and staff tossed aside while watching the action of the small waterfall on the otherwise tranquil stream. His small dog stands beside him while the sheep graze carelessly, each showing total disregard for the two men and their dog hunting in shadows of the woods behind them. Across the bank a pair of unattended billy goats graze on the trees of the deeply shaded forest floor. There is a harmony and perfect sense of balance in this intricately detailed scene, an effective infusion of the transcendental into a quiet landscape scene. The work is signed lower left in his typical scrawling script "PG [intertwined] Van Os f 1821" and the back of the frame retains an early Christie's label. It is presented in a very fine carved giltwood frame. PIETER GERARDUS VAN OS Born in The Hague on October 8th of 1776 into the renowned Van Os family of painters, Pieter would spend his early years studying under his father Jan together with his brother Georgius Johannes Jacobus (Dutch, 1782-1861) in their father's studio. The three men had remarkable careers and would become some of the most influential painters in the Netherlands throughout the first half of the 19th century. Unlike his brother and father, Pieter moved away from still-life paintings and focused his work on rural landscapes of the Dutch countryside. He was self-taught in this pursuit, first as a copyist of the renowned Dutch "Golden Age" painters Karel Dujardin (Dutch, 1626-1678) and Paulus Potter (Dutch, 1625-1654) while also being heavily influenced by the landscape work of Jacob van Ruisdael and the allegorical landscapes of Nicolaes Pieterszoon Berchem. From his studio in Amsterdam, Pieter taught such notable pupils as Wouterus Verschuur...
