About the Item

Oil on panel representing "The Death of Cleopatra" Signed lower right Maria SZANTHO, dated 1928. Hungarian school. Former pianist, she launched an artistic career under the tutelage of Kukan GEZA. Her favorite subjects quickly became female nudes. In 1924, she exhibited her paintings at the Mucsarnok Salon in Budapest, where critics recognized her original style after having been influenced by painters like Lotz and Benczur. She made several study trips to France and Italy and was particularly fascinated, she says, by the atmosphere of Paris . Maria Szantho's paintings are realistic and rich in detail, inspired by the hedonism of Károly Lotz's nudes combined with the vivid colours of Gyula Benczúr (who in turn was inspired by the splendours of Veronese and Tiepolo ). Among the subjects represented in his paintings were flowers, children and portraits; but her favourites, and by far the most numerous, were portraits of young women depicted half-body or full-length, generously cleavage-baring or completely undressed, asleep or staring at the viewer, or elsewhere, against a draped or naturalistic background. The episode painted here relates the death that the queen of Egypt gave herself in August of the year 30 BC, by being bitten by an asp, after the news of the defeat of her troops against those of Octavian, future emperor of Rome. Original frame (116x90), as well as canvas and stretcher. Will be cleaned .
