Dorothy Sklar Signed Mid-Century California Original Landscape & Church Painting

About the Item

A beautiful and quite engaging original watercolor painting by California artist Dorothy Sklar (1906-1996) featuring a colorful, lush landscape with mountain backdrop contrasted against a white painted church. The painting is signed and dated (1955) by Sklar in the lower right. Dorothy Sklar was born in New York City, NY. Her family moved to Southern California when she was four. She grew up in the Los Angeles area and attended the University of Southern California as well as the Chouinard Art Institute (also in Los Angeles) where she studied watercolor painting under the teaching of Millard Sheets and Dong Kingman, In the 1940s she quit her teaching job to focus on her art and exhibiting. She also traveled throughout the united States and Mexico. She is primarily known for her untouched landscapes, city and rural scenes as well as old houses and street life scenes within the Los Angeles area. Sklar was a member of and exhibited with the California Art Club; the California Water Color Society; the Arthur Wesley Dow Association at the University of California, Los Angeles; the Laguna Beach Art Association, the National Association of Women Artists; the National Society of Painters in Casein and Acrylic; the New Orleans Art Association; the Westwood Art Association, and the Women Painters of the West. Her work is represented in the Farhat Cultural Center, the Hilbert Museum of California Art, and the National Gallery of Art. Selected exhibitions include: 1944 - 1946: Santa Cruz Art League 1944: Alabama Watercolor Society 1944 - 1956: Delgado Museum 1949 - 1966: California State Fair 1953, 1954: California Palace of Fine Arts, San Francisco 1954, 1955: Los Angeles County Museum of Art 1955: Butler Museum of Art A unique original work. A wonderful, highly engaging large original abstract female nude pastel painting/drawing by Swiss/ American/ Californian painter-artist Hans Burkhardt. This work, titled "Seated Female" is hand-signed and dated (1958) by the artist. An original, one-of-a-kind, and unusually large work by Burkhardt. Would be the crown jewel to any collection of his work or a stunning stand-alone art accent piece in about any setting. His earlier abstract female forms are becoming rare and harder to find. Hans Burkhardt was born in 1904 in Basel, Switzerland. At the age of 20, he immigrated to New York to work with his father. From 1925 to 1928 he attended the Cooper Union School of the Arts, where he befriended mentor Arshile Gorky and Willem de Kooning—sharing Gorky's studio from 1928 to 1937. In 1937 he moved to Los Angeles, California. Burkhardt held his first solo exhibition in 1939 at Stendahl Gallery in Los Angeles. In 1945 he had a highly acclaimed solo exhibition at the Los Angeles County Museum. Burkhardt spent most of the 1950s working in Mexico. Art critics of the time considered him a "great Mexican master” alongside Orozco, Rivera, and Siqueiros, and Rufino Tamayo admired his work. He returned to Los Angeles in the 1960s to create some of the most powerful examples of Abstract Expressionism of the time. During this time he also became well known for his richly drawn pastel abstractions of the human figure of which this original work certainly qualifies. He died in Los Angeles in 1994.
