About the Item

Pair of reverse glass paintings in gouache depicting two landscapes. One of them features a castle and a bath scene, the other one animals and various characters. The drawing is extremely precise. Giltwood frames. A landscape is signed Lebelle, circa 1810. Dimensions without frame: L 17.5 cm, H 12.5 cm. Dimensions with frame: L 20 cm, P 2 cm, H 14.5 cm./W 7.9 in, D .8 in, H 5.7 in. The reverse glass painting was invented in the mid-18th century by Arnaud Vincent de Montpetit. These small oil paintings on fine canvas are glued and fixed under a protective glass. Louis-Nicolas and Henri-Joseph van Blarenberghe were two French brothers born in Lille, painting usually in gouache during the 18th century. Their style - close to Flemish painting, was similar and they often worked on the same painting together. They specialized in seascapes and scenes of military encampments and battles. Miniatures by the brothers often decorated snuff boxes and small decorative objects.

Landscape with Mill and Pastoral, Gouache on Paper
Located in Paris, FR
Two Romantic paintings depicting a country landscape with mill, and a pastoral scene with shepherds and peasants dancing or discussing. The pastoral, or bucolic, scenes depict life in an idealized manner, with schepherds herding livestock around open areas of land according to seasons and the changing availability of water and pasture. Pastoral scenes were very popular in the 18th century litterature, music and art, in line with Rousseau's ideas in favour of the original harmony between man and nature. Giltwood frames with original labels marked: E. Grosvallet / Cadres anciens...
