Two Landscapes Attributed to Elias Martin

About the Item

Pair of panels featuring battle scene in a landscape and soldiers in a landscape. The two scenes have a similar composition, with a foreground framed by trees and animated with figures, and a background with lake and mountains. These panels are attributed to Elias Martin (1739-1818), a Swedish landscape and history painter. He worked for ten years in England, and is best known for his landscapes with typically Nordic atmosphere and romantic lighting effects. Oil on oak panels.     Remarkable Louis XVI style rolltop writing desk with marquetry latticework pattern. The front of the desk features six drawers. The rolling cover is embellished with a beautiful marquetry medallion surrounded by ormolu garlands. It opens to reveal six small drawers and an extendible writing surface covered with brown leather and framed with gold-colored motifs. The central drawer under the cover has a secret opening underneath, that can be opened by pressing a button. The top of the desk is bordered with an openwork frame.
