Executed in oil on canvas and housed in a molded giltwood frame, the composition reflects the influence of the French and Belgian animalier tradition, particularly in the manner of Henry Schouten, Jules Planquette, or Eugène Quinton.
In the foreground, three well-observed cows, white, chestnut, and black, stand at the water’s edge, their reflections subtly mirrored in the gently rippling stream. The figures are rendered with a painterly touch and confident draftsmanship, while the backdrop of grazing cattle, leafy trees, and an overcast sky captures the peaceful rhythm of country life.
Likely painted circa 1910–1920, the work shows stylistic affinities with late Barbizon and rural realist schools.
