About the Item
A brilliant and arresting example of high-style Art Deco painting from the late 1920s, this exotic scene of a female figure -- no doubt a royal or divine personage -- riding an elephant, accompanied by a procession of retainers and servants, was painted by Cesare Bentivoglio in a bold palette of crimson, gold, cerulean and pale blue. The procession includes two figures on horseback, and several in turbans and elaborate cloaks that are decorated in complex, Art Deco geometric patterns. Bentivoglio painted fairly conventional landscapes for much of his life, but between 1925 and 1930 he painted a series of figurative scenes, like this, each of which explored mythological or legendary events, and all expressed in a strong palette. The painting is gouache on heavy paper or board. It is both monogrammed and signed in the lower right. (Dimensions include frame; visible painting itself is 16 inches high by 14.75 inches wide.)
