Glowing with tenderness, love and warmth, this depiction of a sleeping father, his arm protectively embracing his baby son, was painted by Svatopluk Machal, a Czech painter, in the 1930s. Strongly reminiscent of the work being done by American painters in the WPA period, this piece shows that artists celebrated workers and their day to day lives throughout Europe and the Americas in this period.
