About the Item

A finely executed 19th century seascape depicting Dutch sailing vessels and figures in rowboats on a calm sea. Oil on canvas, signed bottom left, affixed to what appears to be its original keyed stretcher, set within a later gilt patinated & gesso molded wood frame. Dimensions, (sight) 8.25” high x 16.25” high. Framed, 12.5” high x 19.75” wide x 1.5” deep. WILLIAM ADOLPHUS KNELL 1st. Snr. (1801-1875) was a highly accomplished 19th century British marine painter, working from 1825 until 1874, and although he painted primarily English coastal views & seascapes, he also painted along the French, Dutch & Belgium coastlines. He received two Royal Commissions from Queen Victoria, titled “The Landing of the Prince Regent at Dover”, and “The Review of the Fleet at Spithead”, both of which remain in the British Royal Collection. Other works by the artist are in the permanent collections of the British Parliamentary Collection & The British Maritime Museum. William Adolphus Knell Snr. exhibited works at The British Institution (B.I.) from 1825-1867, and The Royal Academy (R.A.) & The Society of British Artists (S.A.) from 1825-1866. His work is represented in the permanent collections of the National Gallery in Edinburgh, the Derby Art Gallery & the York Art Gallery. He is listed in ‘The Dictionary of Victorian Painters, 2nd Edition by Christopher Wood’.

Thomas Luny (1759–1837), born in Cornwall, probably at St Ewe, was an English artist and painter, mostly of seascapes and other marine-based works. At the age of eleven, Luny left Cornwall to live in London.
