French Couple Watercolor Engravings “Le duc de Joyeuse” and “Le pere Joseph”

About the Item

Pair of beautiful watercolor engravings “Le duc de Joyeuse” and “Le pere Joseph” made in 19th century France, with an extraordinary carved wooden frame. These elegant carved and gilded wooden frames in the Louis Philippe style reflect the sobriety and delicacy characteristic of this period, which flourished during the reign of Louis Philippe I (1830-1848) in France. The combination of soft, rounded lines, typical of the aesthetics of the period, provides a sense of harmony and balance against the rectangular shape of the piece. The central oval, intended to frame the portraits, is surrounded by an intricate decoration that fuses plant and candelieri motifs, and in the space between the oval that holds the portrait and the decoration of the frame itself we find four five-pointed stars, one in each corner, elements that evoke the restrained elegance of the rising bourgeoisie of the 19th century. This style would be relegated to the Napoleon III style. Between the two lower stars of both frames there is a phrase that is possibly a reference to the portrayed, on one of them “LE DUC DE JOYEUSE”, on the other “LE PERE JOSEPH”. These frames, which contain portraits of important members of the Franciscan order, come from an auction held at a Calvados castle around 1889 by Charles de Montalembert, a central figure of Catholic liberalism in the 19th century. Descended from a noble family of great relevance in the history of France, Montalembert is particularly known for his work in the history of Christianity, especially for his defence of religious freedom and the role of Catholicism in society. He was a staunch defender of freedom of the press and civil rights, and was active in politics during the Revolution of 1848 and in the fight for freedom in the French Empire. His lineage, which included connections to the Sade family, reflected a unique combination of aristocracy and political commitment. The connection to this prominent politician and thinker gives these pieces not only artistic value, but also a historical charge that highlights the link between the nobility, culture and politics of his time. This object, which transcends its decorative function, carries the essence of a significant family and political legacy. On the reverse, both are handwritten: “Acheté à la vente du duc Montalembert au château de Lafson (Calvados) le 24 sep. 1885”, and on one of them is added “François le Clerc de S__mblay 1577-1636”. These handwritten references give these pieces a strong historical character and great originality. French Painting "Dahlias and Camellias" Paul Bazé, midcentury France
By Paul Robert Brock
Located in Valladolid, ES
Impressive and very beautiful oil on panel made by Paul Robert Bazé, an artist of French origin. It represents a still life with a bouquet of flowers in the foreground on a dark background. It mainly shows dahlias and camellias, which give the work its name. The traditional still life genre shows its evolution here. It presents the characteristic style of the genre to which it corresponds, realistic and meticulous, especially noticeable in the way it works with the different qualities of the flowers and leaves. The dark background is also inherited from the still life genre, with a marked dark interest reflected in the dark backgrounds. Signed in the lower left corner. Paul Robert Bazé (1901-1985) was born in Paris, although he soon moved to Bayonne and then to Bordeaux, where he was a student of Paul Quinsac...
