About the Item

One of a kind painting by ROGER CHAPELAIN-MIDY (Paris, 1904-1992). "Still life" , Oil on canvas. Signed in the lower left corner. Size: 97 x 76 cm; 122 x 105 cm (framed) R. Chapelain-Midy, French artist (1904, Paris - 1992) His training began at the École des Beaux-Arts and the Carmon studio. He later continued his studies at the Académie de Montparnasse. In 1927, he exhibited at the Salon d'Automne in Paris, and in 1929 at the Salon des Indépendants and the Salon des Tuileries. A free-spirited artist, Chapelain was also a brilliant designer and stage designer, qualities that undoubtedly inform his pictorial work. It could be said that his projection was directed toward becoming a Renaissance man, a period he deeply admired and on which his artistic creation is based. The 17th century, and especially the French artist Poussin (1594-1665), were also an object of admiration and a subject of study for the artist. An influential artist of his time, his style takes on a theatrical and highly aesthetic undertone due to his numerous artistic qualities. At a time when pictorial isms were gaining traction, he reflected a personal style true to himself, starting from a classical, balanced, and measured scheme of volumes, and entering into a chromatic scale of great luminous and symbolic effect. He flirts with surrealism and symbolism. He focuses on still lifes and landscapes. This work we present falls into the first category. It expressly manifests its theatrical presentation with a background that could be a theater curtain, from which a rich floral composition, full of symbolism and classical reminiscences of 17th-century Dutch still life painting, emerges from the darkness. The work speaks to us; you only have to listen... A sublime and beautiful work, exquisite and of high pictorial quality. French Painting "Dahlias and Camellias" Paul Bazé, midcentury France
By Paul Robert Brock
Located in Valladolid, ES
Impressive and very beautiful oil on panel made by Paul Robert Bazé, an artist of French origin. It represents a still life with a bouquet of flowers in the foreground on a dark background. It mainly shows dahlias and camellias, which give the work its name. The traditional still life genre shows its evolution here. It presents the characteristic style of the genre to which it corresponds, realistic and meticulous, especially noticeable in the way it works with the different qualities of the flowers and leaves. The dark background is also inherited from the still life genre, with a marked dark interest reflected in the dark backgrounds. Signed in the lower left corner. Paul Robert Bazé (1901-1985) was born in Paris, although he soon moved to Bayonne and then to Bordeaux, where he was a student of Paul Quinsac...
