French Painting "Dahlias and Camellias" Paul Bazé, midcentury France

About the Item

Impressive and very beautiful oil on panel made by Paul Robert Bazé, an artist of French origin. It represents a still life with a bouquet of flowers in the foreground on a dark background. It mainly shows dahlias and camellias, which give the work its name. The traditional still life genre shows its evolution here. It presents the characteristic style of the genre to which it corresponds, realistic and meticulous, especially noticeable in the way it works with the different qualities of the flowers and leaves. The dark background is also inherited from the still life genre, with a marked dark interest reflected in the dark backgrounds. Signed in the lower left corner. Paul Robert Bazé (1901-1985) was born in Paris, although he soon moved to Bayonne and then to Bordeaux, where he was a student of Paul Quinsac at the School of Fine Arts. In 1924 he returned to Paris, thanks to a scholarship that allowed him to join the workshop of Lucien Simon, who became his main teacher. He was nominated on several occasions for the Grand Prix of Rome, of which he won the second prize in 1927 with his work La Mélancolie and the first the following year with Concert champêtre. In 1929 he moved to Rome, to the Villa Medicis, and spent another season in Naples. During 1935 and 1936 he was interned as a boarder at the Casa Velázquez in Madrid. At the end of the 1930s he settled permanently in Bayonne. In 1967 he was appointed curator of the Bonnat Museum in Bayonne. There he spent the rest of his life. Dimensiones: 69 x 90 x 4 cm. / 45 x 64 cm. A lovely and very good painting for any space or room!!!!

Tanaka Tessen (b.1890) Dahlias and Roosters Taisho period, circa 1920 Framed painting. Mineral pigments and ink on silk. Dimensions (framed): H. 159 cm x W. 97 cm x D. 2.5 cm (62.5” x 38” x 1”) An ornate and complex composition in which the artist explores almost the entire painting surface. The coloration is bold and evocative and the tinted silk ground recreates the warm golden glow of sunset. Soft, luminous brushwork details the black feathers of the roosters, which seem to cloud and blur in counterpoint to the sharper points of the eyes and beaks. Their brilliant red combs balance the composition, echoing the rich burgundy hues of the dahlias; the flowers exquisite and lifelike. Dahlias were an exotic subject favored by painters of the Taisho era. The painting belongs to the school of Kyoto Nihonga, exemplifying the principles of decorative elegance and consumate brush technique with which it was intimately associated. Painters of the time relied on the Shijo school method, basing the forms of the composition from life sketches. Sometimes they were then integrated with elements derived from Chinese bird and flower...
