About the Item
Portrait of an elegant young lady and very much in the manner of Jean-Baptiste Greuze. An 18th-century painter of melodramatic genre, morality lessons, female figures, and portraits whose subjects included Mozart and Benjamin Franklin. No apparent markings
Artist Bio: Greuze, born in Burgundy, spent much of his career in Paris under the mentorship of Grandon, a portrait artist. Despite his father's discouragement, Greuze pursued art, eventually gaining the attention of Parisian nobility and the Royal Academy.Greuze's works, influenced by Jean-Jacques Rousseau, became increasingly naturalistic, reaching acclaim in the late 1760s.
Although the Academy recognized him as a genre painter, they did not fully acknowledge his portraits and historical scenes. After a period of reduced exhibition due to conflicts with the Academy, Greuze's popularity declined, and he died impoverished in 1805.
