About the Item
Drenched in rich color and somehow both modern and classical, this scene of nude male figures is presented as a frieze of men along a horizontal plane -- as if they are peopling a mural or temple front -- bathing, conversing, working and enjoying the ruddy sun. They seem to be placed in front of a series of patched tents and a body of water: the artist may be conjuring up a scene from French military life, where casual, nude camaraderie was normal and commonplace. The artist is French, though the painting is not signed. (The painting is stretched but not framed.)
