About the Item
Rare and important, this vivid study was painted by Ejnar Hansen for a poster competition sponsored by the Museum of Modern Art in New York entitled "Hands Off the Americas" in 1942, at the height of World War II. Artists from throughout the Western Hemisphere were invited to participate, and among the jurors were John Falter, whose illustration paintings are much coveted today; Alfred Barr, Jr., the founding director of MOMA; and Monroe Wheeler, writer and close friend of Paul Cadmus and the PAJAMA circle. Hansen focuses here on the alliance of Anglo and Latin peoples, showing handsome men -- blonde and dark -- united agains the common Axis enemy, with two women, again Anglo and Latin, comforting each other behind. Hansen was a Danish artist who was active in "The 13," a group of modernist painters who rebelled against academic painting and followed the revolutionary artistic currents of the early 20th century. He spent much of his career in California, and was accompanied by artists such as Maynard Dixon in painting trips to Taos, New Mexico, Utah, and Denmark. The painting is oil on Masonite and is not framed.

"Justice Triumphant", Mural Study for Queens, Ny Courthouse, circa 1941-1942
By Eugene Francis Savage
Located in Philadelphia, PA
A striking example of WPA mural art, this study for one of the murals proposed for the new Queens Supreme Courthouse -- a 1930s Works Progress Administration project in Queens, New York -- was painted by Eugene Savage. Like many paintings from the period, the study is teeming with allegory and symbolism, surmounted at the top by the figure of Justice with a long sword, spurning businesspeople at her feet who offer gifts and favors. Savage is best known for a spectacular set of murals illustrating the history and lore of Hawaii commissioned by Matson Shipping Line for the S.S. Lurline, executed in the 1940s but not installed until the 1950s. The artist also painted other series of murals and paintings, include an enormous mural...
