"The Return of Timothy Pickering, " WPA Mural Study Painting, 1939
About the Item
Full of atmosphere, rich color and drama, this mural study by Dunbar Beck was executed in preparation for his lobby painting at the US Post Office in Danvers, Massachusetts. Until it became independent in the mid-18th century, Danvers was a part of Salem and to this day it maintains its strong Colonial-era character. Beck's painting celebrated the return of Thomas Pickering, who commanded the forces from Salem and environs during the Revolutionary War, fought an important battle near Concord and became Washington's Adjutant General. Beck was an important muralist at this time and was also selected to do a series of murals for the 1939-1940, New York World's Fair.
