"Mail by Stagecoach, Lynn to Lowell", WPA Mural Study by Aiden Ripley

About the Item

An evocative and atmospheric example of WPA mural painting, this large study in watercolor and crayon depicts a stagecoach being loaded with mail and passengers for the journey from Lynn to Lowell in Massachusetts. The coach is a vivid yellow, the sky a lovely blue, and the passengers and workers give the bustling scene a quality that is almost cinematic in scale. Ripley is best known for his sportsman paintings, highly collectible today, but early in his career he became known for his murals, including several depicting the life of Paul Revere for the post office in Lexington, Massachusetts, and another for the Winchester public library. This drawing is executed in Conté crayon on board.

    Located in Philadelphia, PA
In this remarkable drawing, famed muralist Lassell Ripley depicts primitive man, warming himself by the fire with little to wear, looking into the distance toward the bright, white Art Deco spires of modern civilization. The contrast of early mankind with the advances of 1930s America is inspiring and beautiful, and Ripley clearly draw this to prepare for a mural project, probably unexecuted. Ripley is best known for his sportsman paintings, highly collectible today, but early in his career he became known for his murals, including several depicting the life of Paul Revere for the post office in Lexington...

This classic example of WPA-period mural painting, executed by Verona Burkhardt for the Immigration and Naturalization Center in Los Angeles, depicts five Pueblo Indians in the foreground and a magnificent landscape of canyons and Pueblo dwellings in the background. This served as a study for one of five large canvases she delivered to California in 1941 or 1942, but the building was cordoned off due to America's entrance into World War II. Burkhardt (or Burkhard) was the daughter of two important artists and was introduced to painting and crafts at an early age. In her prime, she won seven U.S. Government mural commissions in national competitions for buildings in Wyoming, Montana, North Carolina, and Washington, D.C. She settled in Grand Junction...
