  • William Gropper WPA Artist Watercolor in Grisaille, circa 1932- “Uprooted”
    By William Gropper
    Located in Phoenix, AZ
This original watercolor by Depression Era New York artist William Gropper relates to two of Gropper's most important Depression Era prints: “Refugees” and “Uprooted.” Signed lower right and dedicated to: Bob & Helen Garelick. Garelick was Gropper’s Detroit dealer in the 1960's and ‘70's. Painting measures: 21 1/2" H x 15" W. Frame measures: 28" H x 21" W In excellent condition. Created circa 1932. New-York born artist William Gropper (1897-1977) was a painter and cartoonist who, with caricature style, focused on social concerns. During the 1930s, working as a part of the Federal Arts Project, he produced some of the most gripping social protest works of the Great Depression. He was born to a poor immigrant family on the Lower East Side fueling his subject interest in the downtrodden. His subjects included industrial strikes, especially in the coal mining and steel-production centers. He did much illustration-cartoon work for the New York Tribune newspaper, Vanity Fair magazine and the politically 'left-wing' publication, "New Masses." Some of his other pieces focused on the hypocrisy of government figures, especially members of the United States Senate...

  • Lotan Lotan Surreal Painting Signed and Dated 1974, Artist on Top of the World
    By Lotan Lotan
    Located in Phoenix, AZ
Surreal painting in excellent condition by Arizona artist Lotan Lotan. Depicts the artist on top of the world - a self-portrait. Framed. Signed lower right by the artist and dated 1974. Painting measures: 24" H x 20" W. Frame measures: 31 1/2" H x 27 1/2" W. Lotan Lotan (1905-1985) Little is known about Lotan Lotan prior to 1952 when he arrived in Arizona in an MG accompanied by his girlfriend Ruth and their pet Bulldog, Sir Oliver Cedric. Ruth, who would later become his wife, was also an artist. In a letter that same year to California artist Claude Buck, Lotan claims to be "living in the middle of the desert painting like never before." He goes on to state in the letter the he had recently changed his name to Lotan Lotan because it was part of "losing the past and becoming an entirely new person . . .doing my best to create a new painting as well as a new personality." Lotan evidently had no problem stretching the truth to help create his new persona. During his Arizona years he typically signed his paintings "Lotan Lotan, PHD, MD" even though he was neither a PHD or a Medical Doctor. Throughout his life he claimed to have received degrees in medicine and a PHD in art from the University of Berlin in 1926. In a 1966 interview with The Carefree Enterprise he recounts how he used to operate a medical clinic and a portrait studio side by side in London. "At the same time I was treating the social outcasts of the Soho district, I was also receiving portrait commissions from the royalty and political nobility of Europe and America." He goes on in the interview to state that he did commissioned portraits of King George V of England, President Warren Harding...
