"Shore Leave, " Large Art Deco Mural with Sailors at New Orleans Brothel, 1940s

About the Item

One of the most striking and remarkable Art Deco paintings we have ever offered, this depiction of a group of 1940s sailors visiting a New Orleans brothel is full of boisterous energy and strong color, providing an amused and amusing view of Navy life during or after World War II. The sailors -- in their tight white pants and youthful swagger -- are enjoying the company of an array of brothel workers, reigned over by a madam dressed in ruby red, with two young paramours to her side. Taking it all in is a group of jeering young men in straw hats to the right, and a young gay man to the left, looking wistfully at a sailor cavorting with one of the women. To the upper right is an older man who is possessed by a voodoo spell. The entire scene is lush with tropical foliage -- palms and ferns in a range of olives and spring greens. Though it is not signed -- probably because of the salacious subject matter for its time -- this painting is clearly by a master who was influenced by the satirical paintings of Miguel Covarrubias and the illustrative style of Milt Caniff, Will Eisner and Alfred Andriola. The painting is oil on Masonite.
